Sky News was founded in 1987 as a satellite channel broadcasting news and current affairs programming to the UK. It was originally known as Sky Channel, and was owned by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). In 1995, it merged with Sky Broadcasting plc, which at the time was the UK’s largest pay-TV company.
In 1997, Sky News became a separate public company. In 2002, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation purchased 21% of Sky plc, giving it full ownership of the channel. In 2003, Sky News acquired Al Jazeera Satellite Network’s European operations.
In 2004, Murdoch placed his UK satellite networks up for sale; in June of that year, it was announced that BBC Worldwide had bought a 49% stake in Sky News. However, in January of 2005, following allegations of bribery and fraud at BBC Worldwide, Murdoch sold his remaining stake in the channel to BBC Worldwide for £297 million.
Since then, Sky News has been wholly owned by the BBC.
